CCC Testimony: City Council Oversight Hearing: Overview of DHS Family Shelters

Published September, 2012

CCC testified about the record-breaking number of children sleeping in New York City homeless shelters, the traumatic impact this has on children, and on our recommendations to address this crisis at a New York City Council General Welfare Oversight Hearing on September 25, 2012.

With a record breaking 19,477 children in family shelters on the day of the hearing, we explained the documented risks to the physical and emotional well-being and educational outcomes of those children. CCC’s recommendations focused on preventing homelessness, moving homeless families out of shelter, and better meeting the needs of homeless children currently in the shelter system.
