After months of litigation, the Trump administration announced on July 11th that the citizenship question will not be included in the 2020 census questionnaire.

CCC joins with our partners in asserting that the goal of the citizenship question was to suppress an accurate count of immigrant communities. Experts agree that the inclusion of a citizenship question would negatively effect the response rates of immigrant households and do long-lasting harm to accurate political representation and federal funding distribution.

After months of legal battles that came to a head with a US Supreme Court decision in June that rejected the inclusion of the question, President Trump announced the administration is finally giving up on including the question in the 2020 Census.

A lot of hard work from many local and national organizations helped ensure the question was barred from inclusion. We’d like to thank all of our partners in advocacy who participated in rallies, social media, letter writing campaigns, and other activities as the issue made its way through the legal system.

This was a big hurdle to get over. However, we still have work to do to ensure all are counted in the 2020 Census. Education will play a key role in dispelling misinformation about the Census and in raising awareness around what an accurate count means for resources and representation.

CCC is committed to doing our part to ensure a fair and accurate count in the Census, particularly when it comes to making sure immigrants, young children and other vulnerable populations are part of the count. Hours before the announcement on the citizenship question, we began to read reports regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids on immigrant families planned for this Sunday.

These raids will target households in several major cities including New York City.
