It seems likely that mental illness was a critical factor leading to the tragic deaths of three infants thrown from windows by their mothers over the past few weeks. These tragedies are important reminders to all New Yorkers that we must look out for one another. If you suspect someone is struggling with mental illness, or you are struggling with mental illness, there is help available in all five boroughs — you can always call 311 to get contact information. We are grateful that First Lady Chirlane McCray has been calling for a comprehensive approach to addressing mental illness and that Mayor de Blasio has funded programs to raise awareness about mental illness, provide mental health services and increase the services available to strengthen and support families with infants. This means that there is more help available for families. We at Citizens’ Committee for Children will continue to advance programs, policies and investments that can help those struggling with mental illness.
