Associate Executive Director for Policy and Advocacy

Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York (CCC) is a nonprofit and nonpartisan child advocacy organization. CCC educates and mobilizes New Yorkers to make the city a better place for children. Their advocacy combines public policy research and data analysis with citizen action. They cast light on the issues, educate the public, engage allies, and identify and promote practical solutions to ensure that every New York City child is healthy, housed, educated, and safe. CCC’s core policy and advocacy areas include early childhood education; education and youth services; children’s health and mental health; income and food security; housing and homelessness; child welfare and juvenile justice.

Associate Executive Director for Policv and Advocacy
The Associate Executive Director for Policy and Advocacy will assume a strategic and influential role at CCC. They will lead and coordinate CCC’s government relations and advocacy efforts at the state and city level, supervise CCC’s policy and advocacy team, and manage a portfolio of children’s issues. CCC’s policy and advocacy efforts focus on budget, policy, and legislation that impact children and their families. The Associate Executive Director will develop and maintain solid relationships on behalf of CCC with those in State and City agencies, the State Legislature and Governor’s office, City mayoral administration and the City Council, all aimed at improving the well-being of children and families in New York.

The Associate Executive Director will report to and work closely with CCC’s Executive Director, helping set CCC’s agenda and engaging in prominent policy analysis and visible advocacy efforts. The Associate Executive Director will supervise CCC’s policy/advocacy team focusing on the key building blocks of CCC’s core work: documenting the facts, community education, and advocacy. For example, CCC policy/advocacy team members analyze policy, budget, and legislative proposals; testify at budget and legislative hearings; coordinate largescale advocacy; meet with elected and appointed government officials; and provide on and off the record information to the press.

The Associate Executive Director role is highly collaborative. They will manage a growing team of policy and advocacy staff and will be charged with sustaining and building collaborative coalitions across the city and state (e.g., Family Homelessness, Raise the Age NY, and Campaign for Children). They will work closely with CCC’s other Associate Executive Directors and their staff teams in Research and Data, Communications, and Development departments.

Candidate Profile and Key Qualifications

The successful Associate Executive Director candidate will bring:

  • At least 8 years of work experience in government or advocacy including a demonstrated record of success in effectively advancing budget, policy, and/or legislative priorities;
  • Ability to manage, inspire, and build a talented staff team;
  • Expertise in one or more issue areas related to children and families;
  • Experience managing advocacy campaigns;
  • Experience working with elected officials, their staff members, and appointed government officials;
  • Ability to partner with CCC’s lay volunteers, Board members, professionals in childserving fields, advocates, direct service providers and foundations;
  • Ability to analyze New York City and New York State budgets and legislative proposals;
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills; and
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent experience public policy, social welfare, law, or a related field.
