The YouthAction
NYC Community Leadership Course (YCLC) is offered to high school students
from New York City public and private schools. The course teaches students
about New York City government and issues affecting children, families
and New York City communities. The YCLC aims to prepare students for social
activism and participation in government and community life. Some of the
issues discussed in the course include homelessness, adolescent health
care, education, and juvenile justice. Visits to programs serving children
and families are an integral part of the course. Each YCLC focuses on
a particular NYC community and uses this neighborhood to learn about issues
and problems in New York City. Students travel in groups to the community
to survey community members, local elected officials and organizations
that provide services to children and families. Students research issues,
gather public opinion, conduct interviews and observe community life.
During the course, students also discuss how decisions are made by New
York City’s government, how money is spent, and how the public can
impact this process. At the end of the course, students analyze, discuss
and debate everything they have seen, heard and learned. They prioritize
problems affecting children and families and make recommendations for
change. At the end of each course, students travel to City Hall to present
their ideas to City Councilmembers and other public servants. The YCLC
enhances members' public speaking, analytic and writing skills, all of
which will help students succeed in high school, college and in the rest
of their lives. The course is offered free of charge, two times a year,
during both the fall and spring semesters. Sessions are held once a week
from 4-7 pm for nine weeks. All New York City high school students, attending
public or private school are eligible to participate. Upon completion
of the course, students are invited to participate in YouthAction NYC's
Membership program. Many students receive community service credits for
participating in the YCLC. Stipends are available through the program.
Snacks and dinner are provided at each YCLC session.
