YouthAction background information

CCC’s YouthAction NYC program combats the trend towards declining levels of community and civic participation by engaging young New Yorkers from diverse backgrounds in social activism and advocacy. Through YouthAction NYC, young people learn how to capitalize on their idealism and powerful voices and get involved in making New York City a better place and ensuring that every child is healthy, housed, educated and safe. .

YouthAction NYC fulfills its mission through a variety of programs:
· YouthAction NYC Community Leadership Course (YCLC)
· YA Membership Activities
· Peer Advocacy Trainings and Workshops
· Learning Tools for classrooms and youth groups

YouthAction NYC is open to high school students from public and private schools throughout New York City. A high level of commitment is expected from members and in turn students receive a high level of commitment and mentoring from staff.

YouthAction NYC develops and enhances the following skills:
· Analytic skills by challenging students to think creatively and critically about social issues and public policy solutions, analyze problems and work through possible solutions;
· Public speaking skills - by providing students with opportunities to speak to their peers, the media, and elected officials;
· Written and communication skills by providing youth opportunities to write letters and testimony and discuss the issues important to them;
· Opportunities for critical debate and dialogue regarding issues that are important to youth


YA members participate in a variety of advocacy activities; implement surveys, facilitate focus groups, meet with City Councilmembers, advocate in Albany with State legislators and speak at press conferences. YouthAction NYC may be used to fulfill high school community service requirements. Stipends are available.
