YouthAction NYC is a group of concerned young New Yorkers working to ensure that every child in New York City is healthy, housed, educated and safe. Students participate in advocacy and research projects on issues affecting children and families. YouthAction NYC members develop expertise on these issues through a number of different activities, discuss what they are learning and then advocate to improve the well being of children, youth and families. Activities include testifying at public hearings at City Hall, meeting with New York State Legislators and City Councilmembers and speaking at press conferences. Members might run a focus group or design and implement a survey. During each project, YA members research each issue in preparation for discussions regarding the problem and solutions with community leaders and elected officials. Recent issue topics have included girls in the juvenile justice system, adolescent health care, programs serving homeless youth and substance abuse treatment for teenagers. Knowledge about New York City and State government and the budget process deepens as YouthAction NYC members participate in it, advocating for New York City children. Students have opportunities to meet with elected officials at both the city and state level. YouthAction NYC Members act effectively and responsibly to address problems facing New York City’s children, youth and families and positively impact their lives and the lives of other New Yorkers YouthAction NYC may be used to fulfill high school community service requirements. Stipends are available through the program and snacks are provided at each session.
