CCC Testimony: New York City Council Education Committee Hearing on Fiscal Year 2013 Preliminary Budget Proposals

Published March 2012

CCC testified about the impact the Fiscal Year 2013 Preliminary Budget would have on New York City’s public school system at the March 27, 2012 City Council Education Committee Hearing on the Fiscal Year 2012 Preliminary Budget. While the Fiscal Year 2013 Preliminary Budget did not include additional funding cuts to schools or teacher layoffs, the Budget would lead to the loss of 1,000 teachers due to attrition.

Additionally, the FY13 Preliminary Budget includes $118.31 million in reductions to programs and services for children and families. These cuts include health and mental health services for young children, runaway and homeless youth services and the elimination of seven Beacon Programs. Furthermore, the Preliminary Budget would result in the elimination of child care and after-school services for 47,000 children.

CCC’s testimony urged the City Council and the Mayor to consider education in a holistic way and to negotiate a budget that restores these core services.
