Community Leadership Course

The Community Leadership Course

Across New York City, in every community, residents want to make New York City a better place for children. Since 1962, CCC has offered the Community Leadership Course (CLC) to equip aspiring leaders with the tools needed to sharpen their advocacy skills and make positive change for children - from living rooms to boardrooms, from community centers, to City Hall and Albany.

The Community Leadership Course convenes once a week for ten weeks each fall and introduces New Yorkers to the challenges and opportunities available to children and youth growing up in New York City. The course begins with an in-depth discussion of poverty and follows with weekly site visits across the five boroughs, which provide participants with an opportunity to visit a wide range of programs serving children and families. Such experiential learning allows participants to learn first hand of the significant barriers to housing, economic, and developmental security faced by many children and families, and innovative solutions being developed in communities throughout the five boroughs.

Background papers and afternoon seminars with policy experts offer context and commentary, and help budding advocates develop an understanding of government policies, programs and funding, and of advocacy's role in improving outcomes for all children.

The CLC is the oldest course of its kind in the country and has become a model for civic leadership programs nationwide. Foundation officers, clergy, lawyers, legislative staff, parents and other concerned New Yorkers have taken the CLC and are now advocating to make New York City a better place to be a child.
