Governor Cuomo Releases his State Fiscal Year 2013-2014 Executive Budget Proposals

Yesterday, Governor Cuomo released his Executive Budget Proposals for the 2013-2014 State Fiscal Year, which starts on April 1st.  CCC was pleased to see the Governor’s commitment to increasing funding for education, full day Universal Pre-kindergarten (UPK) and continuing to bring much-needed reforms to the State’s Juvenile Justice System.  The $136.5 billion budget closes a $1.3 billion budget shortfall.

While there are budget proposals that are sure to improve the lives of New York’s children, there are also other budget proposals of concern to CCC.  These include proposed cuts to the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program, Nurse-Family Partnership, after-school programs, child welfare reimbursement rates, and Runaway and Homeless Youth Services. In other areas, greater analysis is needed to determine the impact of budget proposals focused on Early Intervention and Pre-school Special Education. You can read more about the Executive Budget proposals in CCC’s Summary.

The Governor and the Legislature have until March 31st to negotiate and adopt a budget. CCC will be testifying at budget hearings, meeting with Assembly members and Senators and their staff, and  initiating online advocacy campaigns to  ensure that the adopted budget promotes and protects services for children and families.

CCC provided testimony about the impact the Governor’s Executive Budget would have on children and families at hearings in Albany on Human Services, Education and Health.
